accredited diplomatic representative

Another way of describing a head of mission or, more generally, a diplomatic agent. Occasionally, however, it may be given as a formal title to a representative to whom the receiving state accords diplomatic privileges and immunities, but who is not eligible for diplomatic status because the sending entity does not enjoy sovereignty (sense 1), or because its sovereignty is widely denied by other states. During the 1960s and 1970s this title was given to the representative in South Africa of the non-sovereign Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland and then of the controversially-independent entity of Rhodesia.
