African Union (AU)

The AU was founded in 2002 as the successor to the Organization of African Unity, which was established in 1963 to foster African unity and solidarity. Modelled loosely on the European Union, the AU\'s principal policy-making organ is the Assembly of heads of state and government. There is in addition an Executive Council composed of ministers of foreign affairs or other ministers; a Permanent Representative Committee; a Commission based at headquarters and directed by the Chairperson of the AU; and a set of Specialized Technical Committees established within the secretariat and headed by Commissioners. It is also hoped that there will be more ‘civil society’ participation in the AU than in the old OAU. The headquarters remains in Addis Ababa.
