Bismarck, Prince Otto von (1815-98)

A Prussian diplomat and statesman. After a decade serving as a professional diplomat, Bismarck was appointed chief minister of Prussia in September 1862 (and only weeks later foreign minister as well), and is remembered chiefly for orchestrating the unification of Germany in 1871 and then, as Imperial Chancellor until 1890, for his role in holding the balance of power (sense 2) in Europe. He believed that foreign policy should be based on interest rather than sentiment, that war should never be fought to a point where enemies were permanently alienated, and that all options should be preserved by practising diplomacy (sense 1) with any state with which Germany was at peace.
