Cambon, Paul (1843-1924)

A French diplomat. Elder brother of Jules Cambon, Paul is known above all for his role in cementing the Anglo-French entente of 1904 and remaining in London as ambassador throughout the First World War. Paul Cambon is described by Harold Nicolson as ‘one of the most successful diplomatists in modern history’. The fact that he could not speak English is striking evidence of the extent to which French remained the language of diplomacy until well into the twentieth century.
