An agreement to this effect, which may relate to a specific area where fighting has erupted or to the whole armed front. It is usually implicit in such agreements that the cessation of firing is accompanied by no forward movement of positions or armament. This may be made explicit by the description of the agreement as, for example, a ‘ceasefire-in-place’ or a ‘standstill ceasefire’ . A further way of trying to stabilize a ceasefire is through an additional agreement to delimit and demarcate the lines beyond which each side may not move. Such a line, like a single line indicating the limits of the ground held by each at the time of the ceasefire, constitutes a ‘ceasefire line (CFL)’. It is sometimes known as a green line. A ceasefire may, perhaps via a truce, lead to an armistice and hence, possibly, to a peace treaty. |
