The British department of state which existed between 1947 and 1966 (when it briefly became the Commonwealth Office) to conduct Britain\'s relations with the members of the Commonwealth. Before 1947 these relations were the responsibility of the Dominions Office. The civil servants who served in these Offices were members of Britain\'s home civil service, and not of her foreign service. See also Foreign and Commonwealth Office. |
