A status which may be granted by an international organization to a private organization (and sometimes to a state) with a view to establishing a measure of coordination and cooperation between them. The privileges of the status may be non-uniform, as in the best-known instance of the arrangement: that between the UN Economic and Social Council and approximately 2000 non-governmental organizations, where the latter are divided into several categories on the basis of their degree of interest in the Council\'s work. Entities enjoying consultative status usually have privileges exceeding the ones possessed by those with only observer status, including the right to suggest agenda items and make oral presentations at meetings.
More rarely, the status of a state with full rights to participate in meetings of a treaty regime, as notably in meetings under the Antarctic Treaty. |
