Court of St James's |
| |
| |
The manner in which the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is referred to in the letters of credence supplied to heads of diplomatic missions being posted from or to that state: e.g. they are ‘accredited to the Court of St James\'s’. This is because St James\'s Palace in Westminster remains the senior royal residence, even though the sovereign has actually lived at Buckingham Palace since 1837. St James\'s Palace was built by Henry VIII in the 1530s and became the seat of the royal court in 1702 after fire destroyed the Palace of Whitehall. It is now the central London residence of the Prince of Wales and provides offices for, among others, the Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps. |
