cuneiform diplomacy

The diplomatic system in use between the kingdoms of the Near East from about 2500 to 500 BC, so called because it was based on the exchange of messages written, on tablets, in cuneiform characters. The system employed a common language, and had its own law, custom, and protocol. In its essentials, modern diplomacy can be seen as expressing the same needs and practices as the ancient cuneiform system. See also Amarna letters.
