defence diplomacy

The use of military personnel, including service attachés, in support of conflict prevention and resolution. Among a great variety of activities, it includes providing assistance in the development of democratically accountable armed forces. This bland umbrella term appears to have been introduced by the British government\'s Strategic Defence Review, 1998, and is now officially employed by a few other states as well. It is not to be confused with coercive diplomacy.
