An easing of strained diplomatic relations (sense 2). According to the Oxford English Dictionary, first used in this sense shortly before the First World War; it is also contained in the short glossary appended to the first edition of Harold Nicolson\'s Diplomacy, published in 1939. The term achieved great currency when it was employed to describe the relaxation of Cold War tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States in the early 1970s. |
