Diplomatic Service, British

The body which now embraces those officials of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London who have a liability to be posted overseas, as well as its staff in all British diplomatic and consular missions abroad, in both Common-wealth and non-Commonwealth states. It was created at the beginning of 1965 by the merger of the former Foreign Service with the Commonwealth and Trade Commissioner Services.

Until 1943, a term reserved exclusively for the diplomatic staff of Britain\'s diplomatic missions abroad. The staffs of the Foreign Office and the Diplomatic Service were amalgamated after the First World War but the separate identities of the two bodies were retained until the Second World War. See also Foreign Office List.
