The bureaucracy of the professional diplomats of the state, usually embracing personnel in the ministry of foreign affairs as well as those employed at foreign postings. In the United States it is styled the ‘Foreign Service’, and its members as ‘Foreign Service Officers’ or ‘FSOs’. It is now normal for strict nationality criteria to be employed in recruitment to the diplomatic service, though there was a time when practice was quite different.
