The officer or officers left in a mission (sense 1) or ministry of foreign affairs, or available on call, outside of normal office hours, i.e. during the night or over weekends and holiday periods. Duty officers have the important and ticklish task of deciding whether or not to postpone consideration of an incoming message of importance or immediately alert (sometimes meaning wake from sleep) a more senior officer or minister (sense 3). At US missions all officers, irrespective of their specialities, are required to take it in turns to serve in this role, usually for one week at a time. The duty officers in the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office are known as the resident clerks. |
