economic diplomacy

Diplomacy concerned with economic policy questions, including the work of delegations to conferences sponsored by bodies such as the World Trade Organization. While distinct from the commercial diplomacy of diplomatic missions, it also includes that part of their work concerned with monitoring and reporting on economic policies and developments in the receiving state and advising on how best to influence them.

Diplomacy which employs economic resources, either as rewards or sanctions, in pursuit of a particular foreign policy objective. This is sometimes known as ‘economic statecraft’.
