The final or climactic phase of a negotiation. An American term loosely adapted from chess, the metaphor is not a bad one since a chess game which is not concluded by a checkmate in the ‘middle game’ will extend into a contest where both players have few pieces left. In this ‘endgame’ there are certain resemblances to the final stage of a negotiation: each side has few options left, and the result may well be a draw. |
