European Parliament

The directly elected assembly of the European Union. It has 626 members, known as ‘Members of the European Parliament’ or MEPs. The meetings of the Parliament are held in Strasbourg but (most inconveniently) those of its standing committees take place in Brussels. Originally a very weak institution and largely consultative, the powers of the European Parliament have grown steadily and are now extensive. Apart from general supervision of the other institutions (including the power to dismiss the European Commission), it has important budgetary and legislative powers. For these reasons and because it is directly elected, it is not a typical international parliamentary assembly.
