A less common name for a ministry of foreign affairs. ‘External’ is preferred to ‘foreign’ by some states to avoid the implication that fellow members of some close and intimate association such as the Commonwealth or EU are ‘foreign’. Occasional attempts by British governments to restore to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office its historic title of ‘Foreign Office’ have so far always run aground on, in part, the objection of Commonwealth states to the suggestion that they are ‘foreign’. |
