  The government department usually charged with taking the lead in the conduct of a state\'s foreign policy, and hence with its diplomacy (sense 1); and ideally, too, with coordinating all of the state\'s international activity. It is now commonly referred to as the ‘MFA’. See also channel of communication; direct dial diplomacy; external affairs, ministry or department of; Richelieu.
