  The term employed in the British Diplomatic Service to refer to the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) in general and, in particular, to those on the staff of a British diplomatic mission who, although purportedly professional diplomats, and also often acting as such in practice, are in fact members of SIS.


An informal grouping of states which bands together in support of another state or international organization, typically one engaged in a mediation. Hence, in the UN context, the ‘group of friends’ or ‘Friends of the Secretary-General’ on such-and-such an issue. See also contact group.
