Gondomar, Count Diego (1567–1626) |
| |
| |
The outstanding Spanish ambassador to the court of James I of England from 1613 until 1622, who became an intimate friend of the king. Though Gondomar\'s influence over him was exaggerated at the time and has been since, it remained considerable. His most spectacular success came in 1618, when he persuaded James to execute Sir Walter Raleigh for infringing the King of Spain\'s monopoly in America. |
