gunboat diplomacy

The use of naval power in support of diplomacy (sense 1). A form of what would now be called coercive diplomacy, this became common in the second half of the nineteenth century, not least along the China coast. Though by no means the only kind of vessel employed even at that time for this purpose, gunboats were ideally suited to it. They were small and lightly armed but had a shallow draught and great manoeuvrability deriving from their steam and screw-driven propulsion. These design features made it possible for them to enter rivers, estuaries and shallow coastal waters either to ‘show the flag’ or go into action. See also bomber diplomacy; stationnaire.
