Harris, Sir James (1746-1820) |

Sir James Harris was one of the most notable British diplomats of the late eighteenth century. St Petersburg, where he resided from 1777 until 1783, is the posting for which he is chiefly remembered. This is because the handsome ambassador made such an impression on Catherine the Great that the setting of his diplomacy moved to her ‘boudoir’ – the representational function taken to its logical conclusion. Harris had a general reputation for exceptional audacity in obtaining information and was one of the first Englishmen to be regarded as a professional specialist in diplomacy. In 1800 he was created Earl of Malmesbury. See also boudoir diplomacy. |
