Short for ‘His Excellency’, the way in which the members of a British diplomatic mission commonly used to refer to their ambassador. Since the late 1970s (and the diktat of the then Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary, Dr David Owen) it has gone out of use, ‘HMA’ (Her Majesty\'s Ambassador) generally being substituted for it. As British high commissioners have never been formally described as ‘Her Majesty\'s’, the abbreviation HMHC has never been used. See also excellency. |
