hot pursuit

This phrase refers to the right of a coastal state to pursue and arrest a foreign ship which is believed to have violated the laws and regulations of that state. The pursued ship must have received an order to stop when it was within the area covered by the coastal state\'s laws and regulations; the pursuit must be uninterrupted; and it must cease once the pursued ship enters the territorial sea of its flag state or of a third state. Pursuit may take place by air.
