An event which causes a sharp deterioration in diplomatic relations (sense 2) and may or may not lead to a crisis. The ‘Yangtze Incident’, when the British vessel HMS Amethyst was fired on by Communist batteries as it was attempting to reach the British Embassy at Nanking in 1949, is a case of an incident which did not lead to a crisis. |
