The entire range of intelligence agencies responsible to one government. In Britain and the United States, where the term gained currency during the Cold War, it also implies the existence of high-level mechanisms for the coordination of the work of these agencies and all-source assessment. The American intelligence community is composed of over twenty organizations, with the Office of the Director of Central Intelligence at the top, immediately below the National Security Council. See also CIA; Echelon; Joint Intelligence Committee. |
