Established in 1957 as an autonomous agency under the aegis of the UN (and hence not a specialized agency – although very like one), the IAE\'s purpose is to accelerate and enlarge the peaceful uses of atomic energy, and to ensure that such assistance as it gives in this area is not used for military purposes. Towards this end it has an elaborate ‘safeguards’ system operating in conjunction with its extensive programme of technical assistance in the nuclear field. |
