International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)

A non-governmental organization established by Henry Dunant (1828-1910) in 1863. Its headquarters is in Geneva, Switzerland, but it has a permanent presence in over 50 countries. Its ‘exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of war and internal violence and to provide them with assistance’. The ICRC has no authority over the national Red Cross or Red Crescent societies but as the original such organization it is often seen as having a tutelary role in regard to them.
