After a career as a highly successful Austrian diplomat, Kaunitz served as chancellor and foreign minister under three Habsburg rulers from 1753 until his retirement in 1792. He is regarded as one of the ablest statesmen of the eighteenth century. He was also responsible for modernizing the Ballhausplatz and inspiring the foundation of the Akademie der Orientalischen Sprachen in 1753, from which developed Austria\'s training school for consuls and diplomats.
