kowtow |

| |
The manner in which a tributary ruler physically abased himself before the Emperor of China. The kowtow involved three separate kneelings, each followed by three successive prostrations of the body in which the nose came into intimate contact with the ground: in all, three kneelings and nine prostrations. This was not popular with the European envoys who visited the court of the Celestial Empire. See also audience. |
