The three agreements which settled the disputes prompted by the absorption of the Papal States by the new state of Italy in the second half of the nineteenth century. They were signed in the palace of St John Lateran on 11 February 1929 by the Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini, and the Pope\'s secretary of state, Cardinal Gasparri. In addition to a Concordat and a Financial Convention, a Political Treaty provided for the full and independent sovereignty (sense 1) of the papacy within the territory it still retained: Vatican City. |
