Confirmation that a public official\'s signature, seal (sense 1), or stamp is genuine. A document emanating from within one state – a university degree certificate, for example, or a statement made before a legal official, or a birth certificate – may not be accepted in another state without an assurance by the first state of its authenticity. Such an assurance may be provided (for a fee) by the attachment of a legalization certificate (also called an apostille) to the document by the legalization office of a ministry of foreign affairs. |
