Maastricht, Treaty of (1992)

The Treaty on European Union (TEU), as it is formally styled, was finally settled at a European Council meeting in Maastricht in the Netherlands in December 1991. It was then signed on 7 February 1992 and entered into force in November 1993. It marked the largest advance in European integration since the foundation of the Common Market, providing for both Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and the creation of the European Union via addition of two new ‘pillars’ of policy cooperation to the existing economic one (Pillar One): Common Foreign and Security Policy (Pillar Two), and Justice and Home Affairs (Pillar Three).
