major power |

A convenient term now sometimes used to describe the half-dozen or so most powerful states in the contemporary world. It does not carry the historical baggage of the term great power, while its vagueness permits it to embrace the one remaining super-power – the United States – and its nearest rivals, together with powerful states who do not have permanent seats on the UN Security Council as well as those that do. In effect, if ‘superpower’ is regarded as a synonym for ‘great power’, the category of ‘major power’ covers both the great powers and the upper middle powers. See also permanent members. |
