marshal of the diplomatic corps

The British official who oversees ceremonial occasions which involve both the state and members of the London diplomatic corps. Thus, for example, the marshal organizes and is in attendance at the presentation of letters of credence. Traditionally a retired armed services officer, he is a member of that part of the Royal Household which is called the Lord Chamberlain\'s office. However, it should be noted that the day-to-day functions of the marshal are performed by the Protocol Department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office under the supervision of a director (formerly assistant under-secretary), who also has the title ‘vice-marshal of the diplomatic corps’.
