millet
In the Ottoman Empire, a group granted extensive self-government under a religious leader in return for its support of the sultan. Orthodox Christians, Armenians, Jews and the other major non-Muslim minorities benefited under the millet system. It was of diplomatic significance because the sultan\'s government tended to think of the European trading communities and their diplomatic heads, starting with the Venetians and their baillo, as ‘millets’.
