A feature of commercial treaties, this is a clause which amounts to an undertaking made by one party to a second that any more favourable trade concession which it might make in the future to a third would automatically apply to it as well. This grew in importance in the period between the First and Second World Wars and its general application became the principle on which the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, now superseded by the World Trade Organization, operated. |
