multinational corporation (MNC)

A business corporation which has a visible and significant wealth-generating presence in more than one state or, in other words, engages to a significant degree in direct (as opposed to indirect or portfolio) foreign investment. The term ‘multinational’ may suggest that the directors and senior managers of these companies are representative of the countries in which they operate, whereas in fact they still tend to be dominated by personnel from the MNC\'s country of origin. It is to avoid this misleading impression that some, including the UN, prefer the term ‘transnational corporation’ (TNC).
