In the United States, a White House officer who is the president\'s personal assistant on national security affairs. The holder of this position has easy access to the president and a sizeable staff. When the president is distrustful of the State Department and the national security advisor is a potent figure, he or she can have much more influence over American foreign policy than the secretary of state, even though the post does not usually carry a cabinet seat.
