newsletter

In the early modern period, a handwritten but unsigned circular employed by governments to keep their foreign missions abreast of developments at home and elsewhere. In Italy they were known as foglietti and in France as gazettes à la main. Newsletters containing important information were also produced by private enterprise, a notable example being that produced by the Fugger family of Augsburg, the great mining, commercial and banking dynasty usually described as the financiers of the Habsburgs. See also gazettes.
