observer mission

A mission with this function. In addition to military observer groups and permanent observer missions, such a mission may be established in relation to an individual event or proceeding of a domestic kind. Thus since the late 1980s the UN and other international organizations have created numerous missions to engage in election monitoring, the members of which tend to include election officers, area specialists, lawyers, and parliamentarians. Controversial trials are among other events which attract observer missions. All such missions can only operate with the consent of the host state (sense 2). See also election assistance.
