The essentially European diplomatic system which prevailed until the First World War. It relied heavily on secret negotiations by professional diplomats based chiefly in resident embassies. Invented in Renaissance Italy, it was refined by Richelieu, theorized by Callières and provided with its manual by Satow. While admitting its defects, Harold Nicolson was among the more prominent of its defenders in the twentieth century. Oddly enough, while there are several new diplomacies there appears to be only one old diplomacy. |
