Known earlier as the right of innocent passage, the alleged right of diplomatic agents, and members of their families (sense 1), to pass freely through third states on their way to and from a diplomatic post. Strictly speaking, however, diplomats have no greater rights in this regard than their fellow citizens. Thus, if a visa is ordinarily required for people of their nationality, they must obtain one. Nevertheless, diplomatic agents (and their families) passing legitimately through a third state on the way to or from their posts are entitled to such immunities as are necessary to ensure their passage. See also safe conduct. |
