José Maria da Silva Paranhos Junior, Baron of Rio Branco (1845-1912), among other things consul (in Liverpool), and foreign minister of Brazil. He is generally credited with the major role in delimiting Brazil\'s national frontiers, promoting the policy of rapprochement with the United States, and being the founder of the Brazilian diplomatic service. The Brazilian diplomatic academy, founded in 1945 (the centenary of his birth), is named after him. |
