round-table conference |

| |
A conference presented by its prime-movers as one at which all delegations are, as conferees, of equal status and there are no opposing sides – however much these claims are belied by reality. Round-table conferences are typically employed in an effort to ease the prickly relations between delegations representing sovereign states and those representing non-governmental organizations and armed factions. The term is generally employed as a metaphor for the round table of medieval legend at which King Arthur is said to have sat with his knights to reinforce feelings of equality and harmony within his court. (Rectangular tables, of course, have sides and – if oblong – may be presented as having a ‘head’ and a ‘foot’ as well.) Occasionally, however, a real round table may be employed at an international conference, as at the Bonn talks on Afghanistan in November 2001. |
