satellite office

A term sometimes used to describe a (generally small) office of a diplomatic or consular character which does not have the status of a diplomatic mission or consular post in its own right (although its members will enjoy diplomatic or consular status). This is because it is only an outpost in the receiving state of a diplomatic mission or consular post accredited to that state. Accordingly, the senior member of the satellite office cannot be given a typically head-of-mission title, such as ambassador; instead some such title as ‘officer in charge’ is likely to be used. The person to whom it is given will be responsible for the conduct of the office to the head of the mission. Satellite offices, sometimes known simply as ‘offices’, are commonly employed by certain states to handle trade, aid, and immigration questions.
