A person employed by an agency of secret intelligence (sense 2) chiefly to supply intelligence (sense 1) - one engaged in espionage. There are three main types: the traditional spy, working temporarily and by stealth; the agent who has been ‘planted’ on a long-term basis in a sensitive target; and - most useful - the agent in place. The distinction between the last two is usually their nationality. |
