A region within which a powerful state claims exclusive rights of intervention. This zone may be anything from a part of a sovereign state, as in Persia following the Anglo-Russian agreement to divide influence over it in 1907, to a number of such states, as in Eastern Europe during the Cold War. See also Brezhnev Doctrine; dependent state; Monroe Doctrine; puppet state; satellite state; vassal state. |
