State Department

Formally the ‘Department of State’, the United States’ ministry of foreign affairs. Initially, in 1789, it was called the Department of Foreign Affairs, but within a few months its name was changed to Department of State in recognition of its acquisition of certain domestic duties. Although these were subsequently surrendered, the name stuck.
